Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and the heart of the political, economic, cultural and scientific life of the Slovenian nation.
Here, at the meeting point of the cultures of East and West, the old intermingles in harmony with the new. Ljubljana is proud of its rich heritage, lively arts and cultural scene, and the new role of the capital city. There is certainly a lot happening here. Ljubljana has a long-standing tradition of hosting congresses that stretches back to 1821, when it was established as a congress city. It maintains the friendliness of a small town and at the same time possesses all the characteristics of a metropolis. Although Ljubljana, with its 280,000 inhabitants, ranks among the smaller European capitals, we are convinced that many larger cities have plenty to envy in all that Ljubljana has to offer. Ljubljana is a city that people often return to, be it because of work or because of the pleasant memories of previous visits. Ljubljana, the capital, inspires visitors with its rich antique and medieval heritage, the Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau facades of its buildings, and with the impressive work of the famous architect Jože Plecnik. The most distinctive feature of Slovenia’s largest city is its medieval hilltop Castle, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the city along with a birds-eye view of the Old Town nestled right below, along the banks of the peaceful Ljubljanica River. Taking a trip to the capital of Slovenia means discovering the Baroque Old Town with its bridges, churches, palaces, open squares and pavement cafes. The open-air market around St. Nicholas Cathedral is just like the city itself, colourful and full of life. Ljubljana enjoys itself in a Central European way – with less noise and more relaxation. It is a very vivid city during the day and never sleeps during the night. In July and August, visitors to Ljubljana can participate in the International Summer Festival, featuring dance performances, theatre and music. ![]()
